Having out-of-town guests creates memories and sustains relationships. It also requires a comfortable space in your home for them to stay. Our family often hosts travelers as they come through Chicago. We lovingly refer to the “Hotel D’Young” when there is a steady flow of guests in and out. Our guest accommodations have changed over the years, but we’ve learned a few tricks from even staying at other homes that we thought we’d pass along.
Ideally the home has a guest suite or basement bedroom to create a homey environment. However, some homes don’t have a designated bedroom due to space constraints and creatively use living spaces or are able to convert a child’s room into a space for the special visitor. No matter your situation, here are a few things to make your guests comfortable.
- Comfortable Bedding – Invest in good quality, soft bedding to make your guests feel pampered. Crisp linens, fluffy pillows, and a cozy duvet can go a long way in ensuring a restful night’s sleep. A Pillow Topper is a good solution to a firm bed and if your guests prefer a firm mattress, it can easily be removed to accommodate. A good quality air mattress can work as well.
- Thoughtful Amenities - Anticipate your guests’ needs by providing thoughtful amenities such as extra blankets, towels, snacks, and a water carafe with glasses. A basket with toiletries such as small lotions, travel size toothpaste, or mouthwash can meet a need. Small touches like these demonstrate your attentiveness and care.
- Personalized Welcome - Add a personal touch to the room with a welcome note, fresh flowers, or a basket of treats and healthy snacks. Tailoring the space to your guests’ tastes and preferences will make them feel special and valued.
- Functional Furniture - Keep the room clutter-free and functional with essential furniture pieces like a comfortable chair or bench for seating, a bedside table with reading lamp, and sufficient storage space for belongings.
- Soft Lighting - Create a warm and inviting ambiance with soft lighting options such as bedside lamps or dimmer switches. Avoid harsh overhead lighting, which can feel impersonal and unwelcoming.
- Decorative Accents - Add personality to the room distinctive to your home with tasteful decorative accents like artwork, throw pillows, or a stylish rug. An interesting coffee table book or photo book add a nice touch.
- Tech Essentials - Ensure your guests stay connected and entertained with essential tech amenities like Wi-Fi access and charging stations for devices.
- Privacy and Security - Provide window treatments that offer privacy and block out light for a restful sleep. Install secure locks on doors and windows to give your guests peace of mind during their stay.
- Information Station - Create a designated area with helpful information such as the Wi-Fi password, local attractions, dining recommendations, and household emergency contacts. This will empower your guests to explore the area with ease.
- Cleanliness and Freshness - Maintain a clean and fresh environment by regularly dusting, vacuuming, and laundering bedding and linens between guests. A clean and well-kept space reflects positively on your hospitality.
By incorporating these simple ideas into your guest room space, you can create a welcoming sanctuary that leaves a lasting impression on your visitors. Whether they’re staying for a night or a week, they’ll appreciate the thought and effort you’ve put into ensuring their comfort and enjoyment.
