Longer days, warmer weather, and no more school—all the hallmarks of summer are once again here! We have made it through many chilly months, cooped up inside with mugs of hot chocolate and board games, but now we can take advantage of the sunshine and go explore our wonderful communities. Here are some fun and free activities in the Chicagoland area that anyone can enjoy:

Downtown Chicago

GARFIELD PARK CONSERVATORY

One of the most renowned botanical conservatories in the country. The conservatory hosts several events and classes throughout the summer so be sure to check those out too! General admission is free every day, but reservations are required.

ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

The internationally acclaimed museum hosts many famous art pieces across centuries of time. A personal favorite part are the Thorne Miniature Rooms located in the basement. Free admission for Illinois residents on Thursday evenings 5:00- 8:00pm from June 6- September 26; admission is always free for children under 14 years old.

FIELD MUSEUM

With an incredible amalgamation of artifacts, fossils, specimens, and exciting exhibits, there is sure to be something that will fascinate everyone. Free general admission for Illinois residents every Wednesday.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Full of innovative and creative artworks, Chicago’s MCA always has exciting exhibits to explore. Admission is free for Illinois residents on Tuesdays.

ADLER PLANETARIUM

With out-of-this-world exhibits and spectacular activities, the Adler Planetarium is sure to invoke wonder and fun for families with all ages! Free admission for Illinois residents on Wednesdays between 4:00-10:00pm. Note: Reservations must be made in advance.

PEGGY NOTEBAERT NATURE MUSEUM

An exciting museum and research center featuring a butterfly exhibit. Free for Illinois residents on Thursdays through their online ticketing services.

SWEDISH AMERICAN MUSEUM

A fun and unique space showcasing the journey of Swedish immigrants and celebrating Swedish- American culture. Free admission for all on the second Tuesday of every month.

SHEDD AQUARIUM

From countless aquariums, to petting a stingray, and watching beluga whales, Shedd Aquarium is sure to be a spectacular trip for the whole family. Free admission for Illinois residents from 5:00 - 9:00pm on June 4, 11, 18, 25. Note: there is a $5 fee to reserve online.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEXICAN ART

This museum is full of beautiful art across thousands of years. Admission is always free. Closed on Mondays and holidays.

LINCOLN PARK ZOO

Lions, giraffes, penguins, and so much more, Lincoln Park Zoo has so much to offer! Admission is always free, and it is open 365 days a year.

Chicago Suburbs

LIZZADRO MUSEUM | OAK BROOK

A museum showcasing gemstones and rare earth stones. Free admission on Wednesdays.

ILLINOIS HOLOCAUST MUSEUM | SKOKIE

An important and thoughtful memorial, the Illinois Holocaust Museum is a must-visit. Free admission on Monday June 24, reserve online.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK

Check your local park district for fun concerts every summer. There are usually a wide range of music and theater showcases. Dates and times will vary depending on location and weather.

FREE SLURPEE DAY 7/11

Go to your nearest 7/11 store on July 11th to get a free Slurpee!

PARK HOP

Many of the local towns have great parks and playgrounds. Try going to different neighborhoods in your area to discover your new favorite spot!
